Why Phish Will Never Be My Favorite Band

Since 2009, I have seen Phish 37 times. By the end of summer I will have seen them 39 times. Just one show shy of 40, but I have to fly out of Denver a day early because plane tickets are much less expensive that way, and yes it is killing me inside that I can't be at the final show of their summer tour, especially for the big 4-0. --- I guess I can't complain about only being able to catch them five times this summer, even though this winter will be the first New Year's run in three years … [Read more...]

The Plight of the ‘Working’ Mom

Poor Gwyneth. Even before she and Chris Martin split she was complaining about the challenges of being a working mom. --- In an interview with E! she said: “I think it’s different, when you have an office job, because it’s routine and, you know, you can do all the stuff in the morning and then you come home in the evening. When you’re shooting a movie, they’re like, ‘We need you to go to Wisconsin for two weeks, and then' ….blah blah…" --- Woe is Gwyneth. … [Read more...]

Paul Walker Isn’t Reading Your News Feed

Paul Walker, star of the Fast & Furious franchise as well as the dreamboat any 20-something gal remembers from her youth, passed away in a tragic car accident over the weekend. While I didn't know Paul Walker personally, anytime I hear about somebody dying in a too-young, tragic car accident, all I can think about is how sad it is for all of the people in his life affected by the incident. --- And, from the looks of my news feed, I'm not the only one who feels this way... … [Read more...]

The Cancer Book: Dear Man

Dear man who offered to help me in the Barnes & Noble parking lot on Saturday: - I’m sorry I was kind of bitchy. You were doing this nice thing and I was frustrated and angry and didn’t even turn around to acknowledge your offer. - You see it would have been so easy to let you lift my husband’s wheel chair and put it in my car for me but what about getting it back out when I got home? What about the next time and the next time after that? I was thinking of all that as I cursed under my … [Read more...]

Bracing for the fall

What is it about fall that makes us feel so warm and fuzzy inside? --- Something about that reliable ol' autumnal equinox turns even the most jaded of New Yorkers into smiling Pashmina wearers, and the most unfit New Englanders into hiking extraordinaires. I know because I have dabbled in both of these occupations: I grew up in Berkshire County, which meant that for 10 months out of the year I fought a boredom so fierce that it made Anne Frank's time in the annex look like a trip to Disney. … [Read more...]

Molly, Miley & Other Things That the News is Completely Clueless About

Last weekend, 20-year-old Olivia Rotondo and 23-year-old Jeffrey Russ died of alleged Molly overdoses sustained at Electric Zoo Festival on Randall's Island, NY. --- This comes on the heels of two overdoses at the Sound Tribe Sector 9/Umphrey's McGee show in Boston last Saturday, which was overshadowed by 19-year-old Brittany Flannigan's fatal overdose at a Zedd show, also in Boston, earlier in the week. --- These are real people, and their deaths are completely heartbreaking, tragic and … [Read more...]

Sallie Mae: The Clingiest Girlfriend You Never Had

Editor’s note: This article was first written three months ago when Angela was in a very dark place. She currently does have a job, does not actually want a relative to "croak” as outlined below, and does not regret the four years spent at Westfield State College. She also still owes a shit load of money to Sallie Mae. --- Remember when George McFly told us, “If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything?” Well, he was lying. --- Hey, youth of America, a word of advice: if you want … [Read more...]

The Downfall of Taylor Swift

Remember when people really liked Taylor Swift? --- Back in 2006, when she first burst onto the music scene with her hit single "Our Song," fans instantly connected to her honest lyrics and down-to-earth personality. Girls wanted to be her best friend and guys wanted to bring her home to mom. She even beat out Beyonce for Best Female Video at the 2009 VMAs (much to the chagrin of Kanye West). And then she got, ummmm, kind of annoying. From her bushels of boyfriends to her Amy Poehler / Tina … [Read more...]

Take a stand against the man (in the labcoat)

Editor's Note: Since the dawn of Buntology, Jackie has been regaling us with her medical tails of woe (and triumph). Most recently, she let us in on her whacky visit to the optometrist. Now she's back, only this time it's with a vengeance. No longer will patients suffer at the hands of over-scheduled appointment books! No longer will we be forced to sit in a waiting room reading old issues of Cosmo secretly hoping nobody can see that we're turned to the "Sex Tips" article, which is pretty … [Read more...]

What Jesus Christ, Bill Murray and 9/11 have in common

Christmas is a fraud. Let me be clear about my feelings concerning this cash-grab of a holiday right now. From my understanding of the olden days, the Christian church needed to offset Pagan rituals that occurred at this time of year and came up with a date that featured a lovely, squeaky-clean hero baby that didn't drink, smoke or spit on public sidewalks. --- Over the years, national and local retailers have been screaming like banshees about the need to buy early and often, and Black Friday … [Read more...]
