Why Phish Will Never Be My Favorite Band

Since 2009, I have seen Phish 37 times. By the end of summer I will have seen them 39 times. Just one show shy of 40, but I have to fly out of Denver a day early because plane tickets are much less expensive that way, and yes it is killing me inside that I can't be at the final show of their summer tour, especially for the big 4-0. --- I guess I can't complain about only being able to catch them five times this summer, even though this winter will be the first New Year's run in three years … [Read more...]

To a Son, Husband, Father and Friend

My dad was diagnosed with cancer last Father's Day, June 15, 2013. He died 11 months to the day—May 15, 2014. The cancer began in his esophagus, a result of Barrett's Esophagus, a condition caused by many years of untreated acid reflux and likely an old habit of drinking whole jugs of Carlo Rossi before he quit cold turkey. - It spread to his bones--legs, ribs, arms, spine, in particular--and likely his brain as the last couple weeks were spent with him making very sweet but odd overtures, and … [Read more...]

Feminist Guide to The Bachelor: Season 18, Episode 3

The third week of The Bachelor begins with all the ladies commiserating on the couch, as per usual. Chris Hanson arrives in his best color block shirt to tell them that this week, like all other weeks that came before it, will be two solo dates and one group date. Thanks for that, Chris. Almost as helpful as when you remind us all that "there is only one rose remaining" during the elimination ceremony. We know, dude. We know. Chris Hanson slowly transforming into Ryan Seacrest as each day … [Read more...]

Feminist Guide to The Bachelor: Season 18, Episode 2

The episode begins with all of the ladies chilling by the pool, discussing how jealous they are that Clare gets to go on the first 1:1 date with Juan Pablo. (I love that they're still letting the dog chill in the house. He's swimming in the pool having the time of his life while these other bitches are panting for Pablo.) -- [Editor's note: Jesus Christ, are all of these going to be two hours? This is exhausting.] -- To make the date as seductive as possible, Juan Pablo leaves Clare … [Read more...]

Feminist Guide to The Bachelor: Season 18, Episode 1

Season 18 of The Bachelor debuted earlier this week, and myself - along with millions of other disillusioned Americans - watched with a mixture of delight and disgust as 27 single women threw themselves at the sexy Juan Pablo Galavis. --- The premiere episode kicked off with the usual tantalizing montage of the newest 'Bach throughout the upcoming season, juxtaposed against footage of him playing with his daughter or kicking around a soccer ball, to remind us what a well-rounded catch this man … [Read more...]

Paul Walker Isn’t Reading Your News Feed

Paul Walker, star of the Fast & Furious franchise as well as the dreamboat any 20-something gal remembers from her youth, passed away in a tragic car accident over the weekend. While I didn't know Paul Walker personally, anytime I hear about somebody dying in a too-young, tragic car accident, all I can think about is how sad it is for all of the people in his life affected by the incident. --- And, from the looks of my news feed, I'm not the only one who feels this way... … [Read more...]

Bracing for the fall

What is it about fall that makes us feel so warm and fuzzy inside? --- Something about that reliable ol' autumnal equinox turns even the most jaded of New Yorkers into smiling Pashmina wearers, and the most unfit New Englanders into hiking extraordinaires. I know because I have dabbled in both of these occupations: I grew up in Berkshire County, which meant that for 10 months out of the year I fought a boredom so fierce that it made Anne Frank's time in the annex look like a trip to Disney. … [Read more...]

Molly, Miley & Other Things That the News is Completely Clueless About

Last weekend, 20-year-old Olivia Rotondo and 23-year-old Jeffrey Russ died of alleged Molly overdoses sustained at Electric Zoo Festival on Randall's Island, NY. --- This comes on the heels of two overdoses at the Sound Tribe Sector 9/Umphrey's McGee show in Boston last Saturday, which was overshadowed by 19-year-old Brittany Flannigan's fatal overdose at a Zedd show, also in Boston, earlier in the week. --- These are real people, and their deaths are completely heartbreaking, tragic and … [Read more...]

Sallie Mae: The Clingiest Girlfriend You Never Had

Editor’s note: This article was first written three months ago when Angela was in a very dark place. She currently does have a job, does not actually want a relative to "croak” as outlined below, and does not regret the four years spent at Westfield State College. She also still owes a shit load of money to Sallie Mae. --- Remember when George McFly told us, “If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything?” Well, he was lying. --- Hey, youth of America, a word of advice: if you want … [Read more...]

The Downfall of Taylor Swift

Remember when people really liked Taylor Swift? --- Back in 2006, when she first burst onto the music scene with her hit single "Our Song," fans instantly connected to her honest lyrics and down-to-earth personality. Girls wanted to be her best friend and guys wanted to bring her home to mom. She even beat out Beyonce for Best Female Video at the 2009 VMAs (much to the chagrin of Kanye West). And then she got, ummmm, kind of annoying. From her bushels of boyfriends to her Amy Poehler / Tina … [Read more...]
