A Mother’s Day Marathon of Sports [by Jeff Dale]

Last year we had the Red Sox epic comeback from five runs down in the bottom of the ninth. This year we got another memorial Mother’s Day in the form of three wins from the boys from Boston.

First the Black and Gold got on the board with an early 1-0 lead on account of a pretty give-and-go from Phil Kessel and Marc Sarvard. The B’s went on to win 4-0, thanks to Tim Thomas stoning the Canes all night long.

During the game I asked my buddy Murph (huge B’s fan) whether Claude would ever consider starting Fernandez and give Timmy a break. The resounding answer from Murph?

“NOOO!”

With the goose egg victory in mind, Murph was right. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it, right? The series now stands at 3-2, and the Bruins will look to pull off a 3-1 comeback for the first time in their history. They went to seven games against the Habs last year, but ultimately ran out of gas. We’ll see what they have left in the tank this year.

Speaking of left in the tank, the Celtics looked like a D-League team in Game 3, and The Truth was playing like a guy on the wrong side of 30, not a Finals MVP.

Game 4 changed it all with Peirce rejuvenating himself by leading all scorers with 27 points. Rondo put in another double-double and Glen Davis went from a Big Baby to a Big Adolescent, hitting a buzzer beater to tie the series at 2-2.

But something is bugging me, and no, it’s not the swine flu.

Dwight Howard is the Defensive Player of the Year, right? He did lead the league in blocked shots and rebounding, something only five other players have ever done, right? How the hell does Rajon Rondo, at 6-foot-1, 160 pounds soaking wet, grab 14 boards in this game? He was the second leading rebounder behind Howard, who had 17!!! Are you kidding me Dwight? I thought round one was a fluke with Rondo averaging a triple-double. He’s still pretty close with only eight helpers per game this series, but is still averaging 10 plus boards a contest. But I digress.

The Sox wrapped the night up with back-to-back doubles from Papi and Bay to take a 4-3 lead in the eighth. Then Pap’s came in and promptly gave up a hit and a walk, then stuck out the side in perfect shaky-but-I-still-can-turn-it-on-when-I-want-too Papelbon style.

Let’s hope both series go seven so we can meet back here next Sunday for another Boston sports marathon. If it happens, a running diary will certainly be in order.
